Background of the Study

Noise pollution is a growing environmental and public health concern, particularly in urban centers where traffic congestion, industrial activities, and social events contribute to excessive noise levels. Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can lead to hearing impairment, cardiovascular issues, stress, and reduced productivity (WHO, 2024).

In Kano State, rapid urbanization and increased commercial activities have intensified noise pollution, yet public awareness of its health risks remains low (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Noise pollution awareness campaigns aim to educate residents about its dangers and promote mitigation measures such as zoning laws and noise regulations. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives is not well-documented.

This study evaluates noise pollution awareness levels in urban Kano State and examines its health implications for residents.

Statement of the Problem

Despite existing regulations, noise pollution remains a significant issue in Kano State, affecting residents' health and well-being. Many individuals are unaware of the long-term effects of excessive noise exposure, leading to increased cases of stress-related illnesses and hearing problems (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). The effectiveness of noise pollution awareness campaigns in mitigating health risks remains uncertain.

This study investigates the impact of noise pollution awareness on public health and explores barriers to effective implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of public awareness of noise pollution in urban Kano State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of noise pollution on residents' health.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of noise pollution control measures.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of public awareness of noise pollution in urban Kano State?
  2. How does noise pollution impact residents' health?
  3. What challenges hinder the enforcement of noise pollution control measures?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Noise pollution awareness has no significant impact on public knowledge of its health effects.
  2. There is no significant relationship between noise pollution exposure and health issues among residents.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the enforcement of noise pollution control measures.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on urban areas of Kano State, examining the impact of noise pollution awareness on residents' health. Limitations include variations in noise exposure, differences in perception of noise pollution, and challenges in measuring long-term health effects.

Definitions of Terms

  • Noise Pollution: Excessive or harmful levels of sound in the environment that negatively impact human health and well-being.
  • Public Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding individuals have about a specific issue.
  • Health Implications: The effects of environmental factors on physical and mental well-being.
